Prepare to journey back to the familiar plains of Ancient Egypt in Yggdrasil’s eagerly anticipated follow-up to one of their best-loved titles.
Valley of the Gods 2 applies the same winning formula that made the original such a stunning success, while throwing in a smattering of unexpected twists along the way. Expect to see a return of features like Blockers, Lives and Multipliers, while the unconventional reel setup has been given a whole new makeover.
So how does the sequel shape up to the 2017 prequel? Let’s find out..
The first thing players will notice upon loading the game, aside from the polished artwork on display, is the unusual setup of the reel-face. In keeping with the Egyptian-heavy flavour, Yggdrasil gave a debut to the pyramid-looking playing area in the original outing, but the structure appears to have fallen on its side three years on.
We begin with six reels across a unique 1-2-3-4-5-2 format, flanked by Scarab blockers that remove every time a winning combo is achieved. What starts off with 240 ways to win can suddenly become 20,000+ with all Scarab blockers removed - multiplying your win opportunities 83 times over.
10 symbols make up the paytable, including the less premium playing cards running 9-A, while a quartet of iconic Egyptian symbols sit at the other end: Bastet, Sobek, Anubis and Horus. A win of 20x your wager can be earned for landing a win of 6 Bastets - the richest in the base game.
Helping the game along is an exotic sounding audio score, which is synced perfectly with the palm-lined, sandy backdrop. Yggdrasil really know how to transport us straight to the thick of the action.
Echoing the reel configuration, the gameplay in Valley of the Gods 2 is hardly run of the mill stuff, either.
A win is accomplished by landing at least 3 matching symbols in adjacent reels, beginning at the left outer reel. Catching multiple winning symbols on a single reel, meanwhile, multiples the return amount.
With every successful winning combo, any Scarab blockers belonging to corresponding reels clear from view - expanding the reels to amplify your win potential. A Respin then occurs following every win, and Scarabs continue to scuttle off the reels.
Manage to clear the entire setup of every single Scarab, and not only do you open up over 20,000 ways to win, but the Lives, Wild and Multi meters sat to the left of the reel begin to fill. The features work best when feeding off one another, and can set off some exhilarating chain reactions.
We’ll discuss these each in a little detail below.
First off is the Lives meter, which grants you a second chance after your next unsuccessful respin, while retaining the current expanded format of the reels. Find five of these in a single respin to earn an extra life.
Make use of a Stacked Wild column in return for collecting five Golden Scarabs playing Valley of the Gods 2. What’s more, the reel is ‘sticky’ - keeping it locked in place until it forms part of a wining combo, or until the round comes to a close.
Five Blue Scarabs, meanwhile, fill up the Multi meter and can lead to unlimited multiplier wins starting from 1x, holding the key to the more premium rewards in this action-filled game.
Only once all Lives are exhausted does the game return to its original format and all 16 Scarabs head back into place.
Yggdrasil have cranked up the volatility setting ever so slightly on this sequel, to medium/high. What that means is players can expect a slightly reduced volume of wins, but they’ll swell your coffers nicely on the odd occasion they pop up.
iOS, Android, Windows - you name it, the game has been configured to run seamlessly on just about any modern gaming platform you can think of - so can you be transported back in time whenever and wherever the time suits.
There was huge excitement whipped up at the news Yggdrasil would be bringing back one of their flagship creations for round two, and we’re happily relieved to say that fans of the original, or indeed of Ancient Egyptian-themed slots, will not be disappointed with this superb remake.
The developer expertly manage to recapture the spirit of the original, while keeping the whole gaming experience fresh - not an easy feat.
The slot may appear a little complex to the uninitiated, but for the more seasoned slot players, Valley of the Gods 2 represents one of the most compelling Egyptian slots ever created, making use of some ingenious game mechanics.
Yggdrasil remain one of the more forward-thinking software suites in the business, and this particular series represents one of their more ambitious projects to date, marrying complex gameplay with a tried and tested theme - and the result is once again something magical indeed.
